Keys to the Archive: Miss Jane Pittman

Acknowledgements

This project would not have been possible without the support of the folks at the Ernest J. Gaines Center. Aside from acting as good custodians to the archival collections and the space that houses them, Cheylon Woods and Jordan Richardson served as exemplary guides while we undertook this work. Chey helped me plan the course, lending useful logistical ideas and insightful critical suggestions as I plotted the semester. Jordan ensured that we had everything we needed, including a number of digital resources we would not have known about otherwise. The Center’s graduate assistants, Jeanna Mason and Em Tielman, also deserve our thanks for welcoming us into the space and helping us locate materials. The entire team helped us feel part of a larger community.

We were lucky enough to have Ronan Crowley visit just as we pivoted from theoretical inquiry toward archival investigation. We made that transition more smoothly thanks to his lecture on James Joyce’s source materials for Ulysses, which modeled an approach to archival research. Ronan also lent us his expertise in genetic criticism, giving us reference points for conceptualizing The Autobiography collections.

We owe thanks also to the Scalar team at the University of Southern California. Their commitment to public scholarship gave us the perfect platform for this project. They provided helpful technical support on a couple occasions when we encountered hiccups.
