Synecdoche

Synecdoche is a figure of speech that uses a part of something to signify the whole. Or, in some cases, the whole is used to signify a smaller component part. Synecdoche lets writers express an idea in a simpler or more concrete way than literal speech might allow. For example, political writers and news reporters often refer to "Washington" when they mean the federal government. It makes sense because much of the United States federal government is located in Washington D.C. In this case, the abstract concept of a group of government branches, agencies, and bureaus is made more concrete by reference to a specific city where they have offices.
