Keys to the Archive: A Gathering of Old Men

Again, Far From Home

By Hailey Rose Hanks

Below is a typescript draft of the scene in which Mapes beats the old men one by one. The erasure poem that follows, entitled "Again, Far From Home," employs the technique of redaction to highlight the repetitive nature of this scene and the violence that the old men endure. Their commitment to standing together as they continue to reassert "I kilt" is also reflected. The technique of redaction itself is important for the movement of the poem and for understanding Mapes's view of the men. Many identifying details of the men revealed by the narrator have been redacted, leaving Mapes's prejudices bare as he requests "another one" and "another one."
